There are many people out there who are very interested in canine history or who are historical re-enactors that find the documentation about collars and dogs available at the Leeds Collar Museum a priceless resource. Not to mention the millions of dog owners out there who enjoy seeing what kind of collar a greyhound, mastiff, bloodhound, spaniel or terrier would have worn in an earlier time period because they either have that breed of dog, or just enjoy dogs.

When you participate with a Living History group that strives to have every minute detail as accurate as possible and documented, right down to period correct under clothing, buckles, children's toys, eating utensils, tools, penned animals and dogs, resources like the Collar Museum are invaluable. Nothing beats seeing kids faces light up when they are immersed into a reenacted time period where they get to see and touch dogs that are outfitted in period correct collars & leads, learning about the dog's jobs in those time periods, seeing brief demonstrations of those jobs and answering their questions. Those kids walk away with a new found interest in history.

Then again, I found "Four Century of Dog Collars at Leeds Castle", a book that I have been coveting for three years under the Christmas Tree today, along with The Art of Medieval Hunting, The Hound & the Hawk.

BTW - I make dog collars for a living & I am an amateur canine historian. I haven't been to the Collar Museum myself, but if I ever go to England, I can assure you, I would spend a full day there taking pictures. Some of my clients have been to the museum, came back with pictures that made me green with envy and commissioned me to make custom dog collars based on historical designs.

Re: Dog Collar Museum, are you kidding me?

Really, I love dogs but I think museums about dog collars are pointless, if dog's really wanted "status", they wouldn't have to wear any collars at all. Sorry, I am open to other ideas like science or museums though. Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and accepting all of them would be "open" minded and I accept yours although I do not agree. :)

Re: Dog Collar Museum, are you kidding me?

Wow! Talk about narrow minded. There is much to be learned about dogs from looking at the collars they wore.

Many of those collars served a valid purpose in the time that they were created. No, a modern day dog would not be wearing one of the spiked 17th century German collars. But a modern day dog usually holds down the couch, it doesn't have a need to defend itself from wolves or bears, which is the purpose of those spike collars.

The intricate collars are like the status symbols of today. An dog owner who could put an silver collar or a filigree collar with etching on their dog was showing their status and wealth to those they wished to impress, much like carrying a Coach handbag, driving a Hummer or a BMW.

Re: Hole in the Wall Game coming to America!

hole in the wall? sounds naughty if you ask me... :D

Re: HUMMER H2 Convertible Spotted in Abu Dhabi!

man, this such a sweet ride! i personally think the red interior is just freakin' hot! damn. who owns this baby?

Re: Marijuana Marlboros! – What If?

I hope you don't mind if we at www.potproject.co.cc use your marijuana marlboro picture! please let us know if you do!!!

Re: Weird Medieval Suits of Armor!

Yeah maybe this could help me think this december.

Re: A Dentist Invented Electric Chair!

woah,

Re: Floating Staircase, How many pounds will it hold?

I used your photo of the floating staircase and linked back to your site in my blog, Decor Arts Now.
